From Wester's dictionary:
(grănd' dăm', gränd' däm')
n., pl., grandes dames, also grand dames (grănd' dăm', gränd' däm').
- A highly respected elderly or middle-aged woman.
- A respected woman having extensive experience in her field: the grande dame of women's professional tennis.
[French : grande, great + dame, lady.]
A few years ago I went to a mediabistro cocktail party where I was enthusiastically greeted by a coterie of young magazine writers—girls who gushed that I was “the grande dame of sex writers.” They meant it as high praise, but I thought, Yikes, how old am I?
This week I have been wearing a vintage silver fox stole around town and drawing compliments from young women. The stole, the pearls, black stockings and high heels—yes, I am the grande dame of sex writers, aren’t I? I am Carrie Bradshaw’s Auntie Mame.
I am fine with that now. In fact, I am more than fine, I am very good with that. Think of the company I am keeping: Helen Mirren, Glenn Close, Meryl Streep, Ellen Barkin, Diane Sawyer and more—sexy grande dames all. They own it—age and experience, accomplishments, successes and failures, regrets and joys, the whole bag that is life. I am owning it too.
My series of Sex Wardrobe Basics techniques, beginning with The Basic Black Dress of Blow Jobs, are the most popular feature on SexyPrime now—the hits on those posts growing daily. (I will have a new one up before the weekend is over.) I’m pleased you love them so much—and, between us, only a grande dame could have put them together.
I love it that SexyPrime readers come from all over the world, men and women, all ages and representing a range of sexual lifestyles. To be the Auntie Sue to this group is, as the old Cole Porter song says, a kick greater than champagne. And I am quite fond of champagne.
