In her new book French Women Don't Sleep Alone, Jamie Cat Callan goes to the source, Paris, in search of French women's erotic secrets. What inspired her quest? Her grandmother was a French woman. Grammy was elegant, with "long, slender, shapely legs." She wore colorful scarves, sheer stockings and heels--and her hair was perfectly coif-ed. AND she clearly still had sex with Grandfather. That's how you know Jamie Cat's story is not a typical American "I remember Grammy (Or Mama)" tale.
Ninety percent of French women over the age of fifty are still sexually active. Has anyone even thought to poll their American counterparts?
Whether young or older, French women are sexy. They have their sensual secrets. Jamie shares many of them. They cook (and a chapter of recipes are included), have dinner parties, but don't "date" in the American meaning of the word. A sense of mystery is important to their sexual appeal, so they don't get drunk and throw up in front of the guy or give him a blow job before they know his name or, most important, hand out Too Much Information.
"What the hell is it with the American date--it's like an interview!" French women told her; and they are right. American women go forth into the dating world with their checklists and agendas, unwilling to "waste time" in their search for the perfect match. Yet they end up years later, still single, with a litany of bad relationship stories they repeat like rosary prayers to gal pals, guy pals--and potential new lovers. I actually know a woman who fingers her pearls as she tells her sad stories.
French women flirt--almost a lost art in America. They love men, they love sex--and, Jamie Cat insists, they wear matching underwear, sexy lingerie, lots of black lace, and never obsess about diets. At a party in Soho celebrating her book, she talked about food and lingerie and individual style. She looked lovely; and I teased her about the day we met in person (after sending one another mutual "I love your writing" notes) when she was wearing rubber boots and carrying a fishing rod--because she was going fishing with her then boyfriend, now husband.
In recalling that image, I must say: She had style even in those wacky boots. Her grandmother clearly imparted a thing or two, probably in the genes. But French Women Don't Sleep Alone shies away from sex advice--though it's a great read and I recommend it. My books sell well in France; and I can tell you that French women do care about getting the erotic details right.
