The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) asks us to "Go Purple" today, October 20, in memory of six teenagers who committed suicide after reportedly being taunted because they were gay.
One of those deaths hit close to home. Tyler Clementi, a freshman at Rutgers University, jumped off the George Washington Bridge after his roommate, Dharun Ravi, allegedly live-streamed him having sex with another man online. Tyler posted a goodbye note on his Facebook page before jumping.
Bullying in general is a huge problem in our society. As adults, we can shrug off the diatribes of the trolls, those twisted, lonely souls blogging hate on their slimy laptops under the bridges where they live. Teens and younger children haven't developed that protective shell. We need to protect them.
Every one of you has a gay relative or friend. Or a child of a friend is gay. Go to the GLAAD website and see what you can do to raise awareness. This is not somebody else's problem; it is ours.
Wouldn't it be lovely if we could make purple the new pink?
